Belarus: the dictator has declared war on his own people

Lukasheko's regime has crossed the Rubicon - the dictator has declared war on his own people, report Sergey and Dina Shavtsov, lawyers and human rights defenders.

Once again the results of the presidential election were grossly falsified, and when part of the electorate who disagreed with the falsification went out to the streets of Minsk to express their protest through peaceful demonstration, brutal force was used against them. This demonstration was unusually large; estimates range from 30 to 50 thousand people. As a result of peaceful protest, hundreds of people were beaten, including women and elderly people. Thugs from Special Forces' units pursued people in the streets of the city and continued to beat them. These facts were recorded on photo and video also by many independent journalists.

About 600 people were arrested, beaten, and suffered enormous humiliation from the security forces under the command of the dictator, who treated them like occupants of the enemy territory.

Arrests continued in the night as Special Forces broke into people's houses, beating and arresting them.

It is as if the Stalinist repressions of 1937 have returned!

The opposition leaders who spear-headed the demonstration were beaten, and, arrested and imprisoned by the KGB.

We are informed that the conditions of the prison absolutely heinous - cells are overcrowded; people are not being given water to drink, for hours they are kept in the cold standing on their feet. We consider this to the torture.

Relatives of the detainees cannot get information on the whereabouts of their loved ones.

Official mass media is filled with spiteful lies about the people who simply acted as a conscience for the nation.

We ask you to support us in prayer and also by imploring the government of your countries to exert pressure on Lukashenko's dictatorship, establish the isolation for the dictatorship of Lukashenko.

We ask you to start picketing of Belarusian embassies and offices in your countries, demanding the liberation of political prisoners, hundreds of which are currently being held in Belarus.
