Excessive tattoos can be a sin because they are dangerous, there is a chance for injuring your body when they are done. But in general they are pretty safe, so they are not intrinsically sinful.
FWIW, this article is interesting.
ok, people will probably call me extreme but this topic has me started! I say no tattoos, no hair dye, no make up and no piercings of any kind. It is wrong to alter the gift God has given you. To alter your body in any way is to say that God didn't make you perfect just the way you are. Oh, and before i get a backlash from the females- i admit, i'm a 34 yr. old lady. No make up , no tats, slowly greying hair and no piercings anywhere- ever! never have i had my ears pierced, even as a child. When i see the twisted version of womanhood that is upheld by our modern american culture i want to puke!!!!!!!
Thank you Most Holy Trinity for the graces you've bestowed upon me; for keeping me the way i was born!
here is scripture that could be applied to piercings and tattoos:
Leviticus 19:28- “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh, for the dead, neither shall you make in yourselves any figures or marks: I am the Lord.”
Ok,so it's old law, but since no new commandment was made by Jesus concerning this i'd say it still applies. From wikipedia:
"The first 16 chapters and the last chapter make up the Priestly Code, with rules for ritual cleanliness, sin-offerings, and the Day of Atonement, including Chapter 12, which mandates male circumcision. Chapters 17–26 contain the Holiness Code, including the injunction in chapter 19 to "love one's neighbor as oneself" (the Great Commandment). The book is largely concerned with "abominations", largely dietary and sexual restrictions. The rules are generally addressed to the Israelites, except for several prohibitions applied equally to "the strangers that sojourn in Israel."
According to Jewish tradition, God dictated the Book of Leviticus to Moses as He did the other books of the Bible.[1]"
yeah, probably
I am against tattoos but I do dye my hair and I do wear make up. If I can make my eyes look bigger by applying some eyeshadow I don't mind doing it. If I can look better by dying my hear and hiding gray hair - why wouldn't I do it? I don't see anything wrong with that...
Depents on what? Don't tell that if it is a cross on tatoo or a word "Jesus" then it is not a sin. It can not depend just on it.
I did not say that :))
But motivation is a reason that makes all the difference, usually :)
And by the way, who said that tattoo is a sin?
That's for sure but what about better body not just better Christian? Maybe someone thinks that tatoo makes his or her body more beautiful...
Think you're onto something here Markus. I think one would have to question the heart motivation of the 'Chirstian' who wants to get a tatoo of a death skull (or similar symbols). I am unaware of any biblical reference that requires a Christian to obtain any form of tatoo as part of their walk of obediance with Christ.
Why is it that so many people who behave anti socially also happen to often have tatoos?
The Bible says that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and who destroy the house. destroy the Lord. We can not write on their bodies that we want, because our bodies belong to Him.
how about haircuts then?... :)
...cars we are driving... how many antisociall people drives same car as we Christian are?
...food we are eating... how many antisociall people eats same food?
It is against our body and more so against God's will to put tatoos on ourselves. The Bible says that body is the temple of the Living God.
where I live the anti social people often drive cars that are black, have mag wheels, dark tinted windows, big exhaust pipes and are usually Japanese sports car styles. Generally they have dents and scratches etc etc.
What do you make of Stick on Tatoos? They aren't permanent like ink ones but often contain the same DEATH type themes, skulls, demons etc etc. As the choice of subject between temporay and permanent tatoos sometimes seem similar, it suggests mottivation of the person's heart is the key and the choice of material is not linked to the longevity of the image.
who told you have to be held responsible for my haircut? :)
what is bad haircut? who set such a norm?.. your preferences, culture, education, people around you, family? :)
.
have you ever think that society is wrong not people marked antisocial by that society :)
.
what set you apart from them?
Interesting idea himalnat. Tatoos are of course long term changes (although can now be more or less removed with lasers) where as an hour's lost sleep one night isn't. There are certainly plenty of things we could do better to look after our body.
However, are ther some things, like tatoos for example, that the bible warns againsts doing to our body. The bible tells us certain sexual sins are sins against our body whereas other sins aren't . Your thoughts?
There is value in appearance just as there is value in the language or words that we choose to speak. I have always wondered why some tattos are hidden and some aren't. Some people seem to choose to broadcast their intense emotions through public display of tattoos that articulate them in a lazy way. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they don't. It's kind of weak and almost escapist. Why not just be forthright with your feelings about something by using appropriate spoken words backed up by action. And it's cheaper just to put slogan buttons on your collar or chest area. Removable any time you want to.
I once saw a TV commercial about a guy who wanted to impress his girfriend Roberta. So he commissioned a tattoo artist to draw a pulsating I LOVE ROBERTA on his muscled arm. Well, in the middle of the project, he suddenly realized he did not have enough money. The artist did the next logical thing. He dropped the A and did not tattoo in the letter at the end of ROBERTA. Guess what happened when Roberta saw her boyfriend's arm the following day?
